🗞️ Champion of charcuterie

Plus, Nova Scotia's growing wealth disparity, Dal ratifies a contract with part-time workers union, and man charged in North End stabbing death.

Happy Friday, Halifax 👋

Judging from my email inbox, I get the sense some of you are not all too pleased with me, mostly golfers and millionaire bootlickers. However, I want to give you folks a break. It’s easy for me to rip on the wealthy—mostly because they make it so easy—but today I want to highlight what might be my favourite story of the week.

As CBC reports, a Halifax man has been charged with breaking and entering for allegedly gaining access to a Lower Sackville business after hours. How did he gain access, you might wonder? Did he pick the lock? Smash a window? Was there a mole that let him in?

None of the above. According to police, this guy hid in the ceiling of the business until it was closed, then made his grand escape. Police found the washroom’s ceiling partially collapsed, the toilet seat cover busted, and the man’s hat and jacket left behind. The guy also allegedly tossed the cash tills on the floor, but stole nothing from the business.

This situation reminds me of Bubbles getting stuck in the meat fridge. Season 7, episode 1 for those of you who want to rewatch that episode. 📷 Trailer Park Boys

This is why I moved to Nova Scotia. It’s what Trailer Park Boys had promised me: hilarious criminal activity. The escapade reminds me of a book I read when I was a kid, something along the lines of World’s Dumbest Criminals, littered with stories like the one from this week. Honestly, it was really close to not being all that dumb—if he had managed to avoid causing any damage, leaving his clothes behind, or being caught on camera, this could’ve been the heist of the century. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be.

Take care this weekend. Donate to your local food bank.

Preparing for the Holidays with Sweet Cheesus Charcuterie

Few things say celebration like a beautifully arranged charcuterie board. Good ones are colourful, abundant and designed to be shared. For Amanda Martin, founder of Sweet Cheesus Charcuterie, boards have become more than just edible art. They are an expression of creativity, resilience and Nova Scotian pride.

Martin launched Sweet Cheesus in 2021, a time when she was searching for a way to reconnect with the food and beverage industry while balancing life as a single mother. “After the pandemic, I needed to find a way to do this without leaving my home. Enter Sweet Cheesus,” she says with a smile. “What began as a side hustle quickly turned into a full-blown business.”
