You know what always gives me a nice pick-me-up in the morning? The looming impeding doom of the world ending because of climate change or AI. Or some combination of both.

Nothing makes you live in the moment like the knowledge that we are not long for this earth. It’s kind of freeing, right? There’s literally no point in doing anything you don’t want to do because nothing matters anyway! Diet? Pfft! Dentist? Nah! Pap smear? Pu-lease!*

I have good news and bad news. Which do you want first?

The bad? Ok, good choice.

According to a new major scientific report, about 12.5 trillion tons of ice from glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica have melted since 1979—which is enough frozen water to stack ice five feet deep across the continental US.

A warming Earth is accelerating the melting of the planet’s two major ice sheets, with five-sixths of the melt not coming from hotter air, but from warmer waters eating away at the ice sheets from below and the sides—with glaciers flowing into the oceans.

Scientists warn that even if we stop heating the planet today, the melting will continue for decades because the system reacts slowly to the damage already done.

To make matters worse, all that melted ice has turned into nearly 3 quadrillion gallons of water which pushed global sea levels up about an inch since 1979 (on top of other climate factors raising ocean heights).

An inch? You say. That’s nothing!

Au contraire my friends. For every third of an inch of sea level rise, another 2 to 3 million people get flooded at least once a year. That’s…that’s a lot of people.

But wait! Here’s the good news because…Nova Scotia to the rescue!

A Nova Scotia startup is testing a method to capture and store more carbon in the ocean—using a new pilot facility to prove the concept.

Phewf!

Apparently, the ocean is already a major storehouse for excess carbon dioxide. Since the 1980s, it has absorbed about 30% of all human-caused carbon emissions. The company pHathom is attempting to grab even more emissions out of the atmosphere by capturing carbon dioxide and converting it into a form that can be safely stored in the ocean for millennia.

(Lol, millenia. As if…)

Essentially, pHathom is trying to stop this warming at the source. They are developing technology to pull carbon dioxide out of the air and "lock" it away in the ocean as bicarbonate. This could maybe help slow some of the aforementioned glacial melting🤞

It does feel a bit too little too late for this pessimist, but I guess what I’m trying to say is: Carpe diem while you still can, ya’ll!
