Oh, sorry Halifax, you caught me right in the middle of my afternoon sing song.
Did you know that we will be seeing a partial solar eclipse today? It’s not a TOTAL eclipse (of the heart), but it’s still a partial one, so you should hold the ones you love close.
The eclipse is set to begin at 1:54pm and last about two hours until 4:04pm. Nova Scotians should be able to—WITH protective eyewear, unless you’re a dumb dumb—look up on Wednesday and see about half of the sun covered.
For those of you in my digital coven, we need to take heed of what this means for us and make the best decision possible if considering casting spells in this celestial time. Luckily, I’m here to inform you of your options.
According to witchcraft lore, solar eclipses—even partial ones—can bring major changes or new beginnings—making them an ideal time for inner growth, transformation and personal empowerment. So you may want to focus your energy on things like:
Shadow Work: Eclipses bring hidden things to light, so it’s the perfect time for self-reflection and uncovering truths you may have been avoiding.
New Beginnings: Solar Eclipses coincide with the New Moon—a time traditionally associated with fresh starts, planting seeds and setting intentions.
Release and Renewal: Just as the Sun and Moon shift into alignment, we too can align our energy—letting go of old habits or past relationships that no longer serve us.
However, very sensitive people will feel more intense energy during this time—which could be interpreted as chaotic energy if you’re ungrounded (meaning your energy is a bit scattered). This is why a lot of elder witches warn against working with eclipse energy if you’re a newbie.
For the rest of us, make sure you feel out the energy within the space before you start your ritual. If you’re feeling chaos—as mentioned above—it will likely pass once the sun and moon have moved apart from their alignment, and it’s okay to do your work just after an eclipse—it will just have the power of a new or full moon.
As for you basic, non-warlock men, just gird your loins and hold on tight because it might be a rough day for you. But hey, it’s just a bunch of Hocus Pocus, right?
Adding to the cosmic wonder, today began with six of our neighbouring planets forming an arc in the sky before dawn and ends with the Perseid meteor shower peaking after nightfall under the new moon. That means streaking meteors could photobomb—with some of the brighter planets and stars visible in the background.

If the Grou Tyme Festival is proof of anything, it's that Acadian culture continues to thrive within Halifax and beyond.
From musical guests to specially-catered foods, Aug. 13-15 will truly be a celebration of Acadian culture, all within downtown Halifax.
Put on by a partnership between the Counseil communautaire du Grand-Havre (CCGH) and the Halifax Regional Municipality, the Grou Tyme Festival has existed in several forms over the years, starting in the early 2000s, taking a break and returning as the Halifax Quinzou Festival in 2016, and then rebranded once more as the Grou Tyme in 2023.
The festival coincides with National Acadian Day on Aug. 15, as well as Acadian Heritage Month, which was recognized by the province in 2024. All of the festival activities are free.
