🗞️ The best things in sports aren't free
Plus, Macdonald bridge closed this weekend, two men face weapons & drugs charges and new bill declares domestic violence an epidemic.
Happy Friday the 13th Halifax 💀
Forget Jason and his chainsaw, the truly bone-chilling character on my mind this cursed day is Elon Musk. Truly, there is nobody spookier and he doesn’t even need a mask.
Imagine you go on social media to let people know that you’re an educated person, making an educated decision and providing education to your 85M followers on how to register to vote and then BAM! Elon Musk tells you he’s going to impregnate you.
Fine Taylor … you win … I will give you a child and guard your cats with my life

So much to unpack here. I mean, the overt sexual harassment is harrowing. But never forget his unhinged fixation on declining birth rates (he has sired at least 12 kids) that has made him big into the great replacement theory. So, there’s that. Plus, he’s insinuating that she needs a man to protect her and her felines from the migrants who want to eat them?! Bitch, please.
This horror movie is just a chaotic mash-up of Rosemary’s Baby (monster impregnation), Get Out (white supremacy) and Pet Sematary (cat horror). I will fully and whole-heartedly pass.
Have a great day and restful weekend!

NEWS + OPINION
The best things in university sports are no longer free
📸 Credit: Dalhousie University Athletics
University sports are growing in Canada. They can be the reason students move across the country to study and compete, they can build exciting inner-and-outer provincial rivalries and they can allow families and fans of athletes to follow their journeys from afar—with the help of live streaming.
“Our student-athletes give everything they have for their sport, and it's great entertainment,” says Phillip Currie, president and CEO of Atlantic University Sport. AUS TV broadcasts live sports coverage of east coast schools throughout the regular and postseason. It used to be free. This season, it comes with a tiered price tag.
Now, fans and families of athletes will have to pay $7.99 for a single game, $39.99 for a single sports pass, or $99 to watch all AUS sports throughout the regular season. Post-season playoffs, games, and championship weekends will cost extra.

🎞️ Halifax International Film Festival
Day 3—PREVIEW
It’s another jam-packed day of curated features and shorts from the Atlantic International Film Festival. Today will see Canadian director Matthew Rankin share his latest film, Universal Language, on the big screen at the Park Lane Cineplex’s theatre seven with a start time of 6:45pm. This twisted tale sees children find their way through a hybrid of Winnipeg and 1980s Tehran, where, as the film’s synopsis puts it, “Tim Hortons serves tea from a samovar and Quebec is an independent Soviet nation-state.” This mind-bending dramedy will certainly leave an impression—as will the follow-up Q&A with Rankin himself.
Tickets can be purchased here.

👀 In Case You Missed It
🏘️ Tim Houston’s government announced law changes to the Residential Tenancies Act last week that will benefit landlords and make it easier for tenants to lose their homes. New regulations give landlords more flexibility and power in evicting tenants, proposing a shorter timeline for filing an eviction notice for late rent and giving landlords more reasons for why they can evict tenants. The Coast’s Brendyn Creamer breaks down the proposed changes and how they leave renters in the dust while benefiting landlords.
🚓 Tuesday’s council meeting really had it all. The main debates were about Halifax’s ongoing efforts at police reform. Council gave first reading to an amendment to bylaw P-100, formally known as the Police Board By-law. This amendment will add the position of Commissioner of Public Safety, a person to act as a liaison between the HRM, the Halifax Regional Police and the Board of Police Commissioners. This should result in someone watching out for the public’s interest in the relationship between the Board and the Police, which has typically worked to advance the interests of police in the HRM. The Coast’s Matt Stickland has everything you need to know about what happened this week at Halifax Council.
That’s it!
