🗞️ Best of Halifax nominations open

Plus, new photo project celebrates local businesses, premier tosses aside campaign promises and Ellie Black hasn't ruled out 5th Olympics.

Good morning and welcome back to reality Halifax,

One of the most perplexing and therefore intoxicating phenomena for me right now is doomsday prepping, and every once in a while I’ll get an intrusive thought that’s like “pssssst! You should pack a bug-out bag so that you’re ready.” But then I’m invariably like…ready for what?

Why would I WANT to survive the apocalypse? It seems like it would be a really bad, dusty time. And then I just picture myself all Mad Max with three cats in goggles strapped to my person and that makes me LOL and then I go back to sleep.

But apparently I’m in the minority of “just take me End Times” because Costco now has a Doomsday Dinner that has a shelf life of 25 years! ReadyWise's Emergency Food Supply contains 132 servings of food and is packed with a variety of meals like cheesy macaroni and other pasta, teriyaki rice, soup, cereal, whey milk alternative and vanilla pudding.

And it comes in a bucket.

That’s a resounding nope from me. I’d rather enjoy the best food now than worry about bucket food later, which is my less-than-perfect segue into a big announcement: Best of Halifax is back!

That’s right, the biggest and best peoples’ choice awards are back and the nominations are open. Make sure you read more below on how the nomination process works.

Let’s do the damn thing!

– Julie

The Olympics are winding down this week in Paris, but here at home the medal hunt is only getting started. Nominations just opened for the 30th annual Best of Halifax Readers’ Choice Awards, meaning you—and other Coast readers like you—get to pick the people, places and businesses that go for BOH gold, silver and bronze.

Think your favourite coffee shop or sushi spot is one of Halifax’s best? Nominate it! We’ve got loads of categories for bars, restaurants and their staff, and the places that get the most nominations in August move on to the final BOH ballot in September.

Want to give your barber, dog groomer or tattoo artist the ultimate tip? Nominate them for Best of Halifax recognition. The city’s original consumer choice award is an instantly recognized sign of success with hundreds of categories—and the BOH winners attract a lot of attention all year round.

Do you deserve a Best of Halifax award? That confidence is good, but it alone won’t get you on the ballot, so go ahead and nominate yourself! There are BOH categories for politicians, musicians, artists, activists and more. Someone is going to win, so it might as well be you. And it all starts with a simple, free, painless nomination. It’s the best thing you can do today.

Head to bestofhalifax.com to make your picks.

👀 In Case You Missed It

🚰 The city’s Environment and Sustainability Committee met on the first day of August, and started that meeting with two presentations before moving on to their agenda of making sure we have enough clean drinking water. The first presentation was from LungNSPEI, which gave the committee a look at the dangers of radon, the second-leading cause of lung cancer in Canada. The second presentation was from Bird Friendly Halifax, giving an update on what they’ve done since the HRM declared itself a bird-friendly city in 2022—mainly some awareness campaigns and a pilot project to give out window stickers to prevent bird strikes. The Coast’s Matt Stickland has everything you need to know about what happened at this week’s enviro meeting.
