Norovirus hitting cruise ships hard this season. Plus: Preston byelection results & a playoff push looms for the Wanderers.

Good morning!
Nova Scotia recently announced a $1.3 million investment into a home-sharing app that sounds an awful lot like a rehash of Kijiji. We thought it’d be fun to think about what idea the provincial government might come up with next:

Norovirus cases are hitting 10-year highs on cruise ships this season. What’s to blame?

Two cruise ships recently affected by norovirus outbreaks arrive in Halifax this week. When the Celebrity Summit and Viking Neptune come into port on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, the HRM will see the two most recent cruises to report onboard outbreaks of the stomach bug in 2023, according to the US Centers for Disease Control. The former saw 177 passengers and crew fall ill during a May 2023 voyage from New Jersey to Bermuda, while more than 13% of the Neptune’s 838 passengers reported symptoms of the virus during a June 2023 crossing from Iceland to New York that docked in Halifax along the way.
It’s not just cruise ships getting hit with the bug, either. Federal health officials confirmed “increasing” cases across the country earlier this year.

Tight playoff push looms for Wanderers after weekend disappointment
📸 Trevor MacMillan / Canadian Premier League
The Halifax Wanderers are left wondering what could have been this week—and for more reasons than one. In front of a sellout crowd at the Wanderers Grounds, in a tense match between the Canadian Premier League’s second- and fourth-place teams, the Wanderers fell 2-1 to visiting Langford, BC side Pacific FC in a Natal Day duel that was chock full of both scoring chances and controversy. Twice on Monday, the Wanderers landed on the unlucky end of neglected penalty calls that, on another day, might’ve—indeed, should’ve—been called in their favour. Instead, the Wanderers finished with a trio of yellow cards and find themselves in sixth place with 10 games remaining in the regular season.
In this week’s Wanderer Grounds episode, Coast reporters Matt Stickland and Martin Bauman speak with CPL commissioner Mark Noonan about calls for the league to introduce video review, as well as talks of potential expansion.
