🗞 Police lay charges in Christmas Eve homicide

Plus: Halifax auditor general bids council adieu and your guide to weekend events.

Good morning!

Yesterday you heard from Coast reporter Martin Bauman on how in preparation for Canada’s Bill C-18, Meta and Google have begun blocking Canadian news outlets—including The Coast’s Facebook.

The response we received from all of you was nothing short of overwhelming. We welcomed almost 30 new Coast Insiders and had our inboxes flooded with heartwarming messages of support. Thank you all.

While we’ll no longer be able to share news with you on Facebook, The Coast has no plans of stopping and will continue delivering the news to you here through our newsletter and on thecoast.ca.

If you’d like to further support The Coast, consider becoming a Coast Insider. Not only will this help relieve some of the financial burden that comes with operating a local news outlet, but you’ll also unlock access to exclusive daily content and a special members-only Saturday newsletter.

Thank you all again.

AUDIT & FINANCE COMMITTEE

Halifax AG bids council adieu with bleak IT security report

📸 Matt Stickland/ The Coast

Wednesday marked the last presentation Halifax’s auditor general Evangeline Colman-Sadd will make to HRM council. Her contract is up, and she’ll be moving on to greener pastures. Hopefully her replacement is as thorough as she has been, as the reports coming out of her office have been vital to the city’s operations over the years. Colman-Sadd, for example, was the person who revealed that the Halifax Regional Police lied to the Board of Police Commissioners about how quickly they were fixing the issues first raised by the auditor general’s 2016 report about the police department’s IT infrastructure and security.

Information security was back on the agenda Wednesday in the form of Colman-Sadd’s report to the city’s audit and finance committee.
