Good morning Halifax,

You know, I woke up this morning with a little positive spring in my step, determined to be shiny and happy despite the world burning down around us. And so I open the news and I am absolutely stoked to see that a 13-year-old NS girl made herstory by breaking a world tuna-fishing record during the 22nd annual Wedgeport Tuna Tournament and Festival.

But the joy I felt about this incredible feat of strength was fleeting because I click, clickity clicked onto another news site and found myself down bad by some truly heinous bullshit that my boney fingers simply must, unfortunately, type about.

A Halifax-area mother is fighting to save a roadside memorial dedicated to her son, Brody, who died in a vehicle collision in February 2024 at the age of only 23. The problem? HRM has a two-year limit on roadside memorial sites (which…pardon me?) and the local homeowners association is pushing the municipal rules. Because of course they are.

The roadside memorial is made up of two rubber boots filled with flowers, a picture of classic sports car painted on a stone and a miniature toy car, that’s set back more than 10 feet from Glen Arbour Way where the crash happened. It’s a place where friends and family can come to reflect and pray.

What possible harm could Brody’s boots be doing? Who is walking down the road and being like ‘I hate that beautiful memorial. Let’s make them take it down.”

I’ll tell you who…

The mother says she received an email about the tribute site from the area homeowners association president—one KIM _(Karen) MAILMAN—asking her if she could remove the memorial, while reminding her of the city’s by-law.

To which I say:

This is the epitome of Karen behaviour and we must not be controlled by these bob-haired wannabe dictators. Please take one minute to sign this petition to keep this woman’s tribute to her son wherever the hell she wants it. We have to make this happen for her, guys.

Also, HRM, shame on you! This is the most insensitive and ridiculous law. There is no timeline on grief and if this site makes this woman feel even a tiny bit better about losing her son, then let her have it. Honestly, what difference does it make to you? Just focus on what you do best: making it impossible for us to get anywhere.

That’s the basis of the new track from local indie-pop artist Burry, “No Hard Feelings”. Released on Friday, Aug. 21 alongside a music video, this is the second single from their next EP, coming later this year.

Produced by Neon Dream’s Adrian Morris, the song details a relationship the speaker doesn’t see moving forward, but still carrying on with for whatever little fun it could bring. It’s a break-up song that doesn’t sound like your typical break-up song: there’s no melodrama, no harsh words, and nothing to look back on particularly fondly. As Burry says in the song, “Maybe I’m just bored.”

🍽️ I arrived at Eliot & Vine, located on the corner of Cunard and Clifton Streets in Halifax, on a surprisingly wet summer afternoon. It was the kind of day that makes oysters and a glass of wine feel less like an indulgence and more like a gastronomic shelter. Between 4 and 5:30pm, the restaurant offers $1 oysters, along with $7 wine and beer. There is one caveat: to access the oyster special, you must also order something from the regular menu (not counting fries). This seemed entirely fair to me.
