Ramblers is back—and it’s here to stay

And is it aliens or is it art?

North American Indigenous Games 2023

Hey Halifax,

I hope you all got to get outside and enjoy the weather this past weekend. For me, the best part of spring is patio season. Patios have already begun popping up around the city and it’s only a matter of time before Halifax is teeming with outdoor dining. Are you looking forward to dining alfresco? Let us know by answering our poll. Don’t forget to share your favourite HRM patios with us in the comments!

Ramblers is back—and it’s here to stay

It’s the build-up before Ramblers is set to reopen just off the corner of Nora Bernard and Maynard Streets, and co-owners Elly Hannon and Adam Pye are finicking over the espresso bar’s finishing touches. The wall-mounted menu board has just arrived, and it’s bigger than anticipated—“People are going to be able to read it, right?” Pye jokes. (To this observer, it’s perfectly-sized.) All around the two, the coffee shop is taking shape. Tool belts, ladders and paint cans abound. This Monday morning, the north end venue’s doors will reopen for the first time since Sourwood Cider announced it was closing up its cider bar (within which Ramblers had been operating) at the end of February.

“[Former owner Jake Foley] approached us just because he wanted to keep it close to home if possible—keep the coffee here,” Pye says. “We were lucky enough to have the opportunity to make the work. And now it’s going to be Ramblers on its own.”

And while a good deal of the new Ramblers will be familiar to Sourwood’s faithful, Pye and Hannon are excited to add their own touches to the space—from an expanded breakfast menu to rotating bar taps and more live shows.

ART IN THE PARK

Is it aliens or is it art?

There’s a new outlier in Point Pleasant Park, something that doesn’t fit in with the usual panorama of trees, brush, slate-coloured sea and shale-rocked paths. It appeared last Thursday, on the park road that goes along the Northwest Arm, and looks as if it dropped from the sky: A reflective cube, about a metre high, giving vibes that are equal parts Borg and 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Yup, the thing looks like a UFO. But the out-of-this-world sculpture is actually part of an art installation in progress by a group of NSCAD artists. The show will comprise more than 10 different works—not all of them cosmic cubes—and some are already installed in locations around the park; the full set should be in place by April 20. Per the project’s Instagram, the exhibition aims to “explore the relationship between art and public spaces.”
