Good morning.

Many of us were on-edge when we learned on Friday that a newborn baby had gone missing. On Sunday, we learned the newborn baby had been found deceased.

This is a difficult situation for all those involved—the hospital staff who learned of the baby from a mother who arrived with life-threatening injuries, the first-responders who investigated the disappearance and recovered the body, and the family of the child who will no doubt remain scarred by what happened.

Two people have been charged in the disappearance: Sukhpreet Singh, a 23-year-old who is a relative of the mother, and his wife Ramandeep Kaur, 26. The charges are as follows: concealing the body of a child, obstruction, and offering indignity to a dead body.

I bring this up in our intro today to remind you all that we do not know the full story as of yet. There has been a lot of speculation—frankly, racist assertions—posted to the internet regarding this case since the baby was found. Rather than make assumptions, how about we wait until we hear what happened?

For now, have compassion. A tragedy took place. etched within the memories of all involved. That’s all we know right now, and that’s all we should be focused on.

Best,

– B

The antidote to what ails our society is community care

On Saturday, I sat in a circle.

Not a committee. Not a task force. Not a working group with terms of reference and a mandate to report back to a Minister. A simple circle. Seating was arranged so that no one sat at the head or the back, and everyone was equal. That arrangement was not incidental. It was the point.

👀 In Case You Missed It

📺 Finding the comedy within cultural clash. That's the thesis statement of Normal Scotia, a show about two Indian immigrants working at a curling club in Halifax, living their lives while encountering the unique oddities of Canadian Maritime living. Created by Charles Wahl and Amarpal Dhillon, this workplace sitcom follows the lives Shiv (Ishan Sandhu) and Manish (Akshay Shirke) as they attempt to comprehend the wacky ways of Nova Scotia. The first season saw the duo contend with several cultural differences, compared and contrasted: arranged marriages, diets, and even the way Maritimers give directions. The second season, available now on Bell Fibe TV1, takes the premise even further. The Coast’s Brendyn Creamer chats with creator Charles Wahl and star-turned-writer and director Akshay Shirke about the second season of their workplace sitcom.

🚨 Nova Scotia RCMP have charged 29-year-old Cody Reid Palmer with first-degree murder in the death of 61-year-old Steven Boudreau—Boudreau was reported missing from Hopewell, Pictou County, though police said on Thursday his remains had been recovered.

🔍 An independent watchdog found RCMP mishandled every aspect of a sexual assault-turned-murder case involving a Nova Scotia woman—police dismissed the woman’s plea for help which eventually lead to her murder on Sept. 17, 2017.

That’s it!
