🗞️ A new wine fair for Halifax

Plus, police investigating theft in premier's riding bank account, Milton will miss Nova Scotia and what you need to know about Nowadays Festival.

Good morning beautiful people,

I’ll admit, I was having a bit of a rough week with a lingering cold, the official seasonal retirement of my jean shorts and the general “it’s too dark too early” blues. But something has happened that has truly tickled me and made me lol with pure and unadulterated glee! 🙃

Passengers on a Qantas airline flight from Sydney to Tokyo got more than they bargained for when a technical glitch meant that every single in-flight entertainment screen played an R-rated movie called—ah-hem—Daddio. Individual screens could not be paused, dimmed or turned off by passengers.

The movie—released in 2023—is rated R for adult language, sex and nudity and includes a scene where photos of a woman’s breasts and a prosthetic penis are shown on a phone screen. In a statement, a Qantas spokesperson expressed regret over the film choice. I’ll bet they did.

This is literally the dream of every 13-year-old boy and the nightmare of every Christian Karen rolled into one hilarious event and I love it so much.

Hope your day is full of unexpected, but delightful surprises!

– Julie

The second-annual Nowadays Festival in Dartmouth officially kicks off today with an incredible lineup of musicians and poets from around the country.

Having started last year hoping to fill a void left by the Halifax Pop Explosion, Nowadays features an array of artists from vastly different genres and styles in venues across Dartmouth. While last year’s festival stuck to local acts, organizer Dylan Jewers says they’ve expanded to include acts from across Canada, including singer-songwriter Jennifer Castle, Montreal rockers Laughing, and even acclaimed poet and author Gillian McCain of Please Kill Me fame.

Finding a gap in the market and being sharp enough to fill it with your product or service is every entrepreneur’s dream, and the smartest way to identify that gap is by solving your own problems.

That’s exactly what Shevaghn Darcy is doing with Cellar Events—her self-proclaimed “business baby”—and the event company that is bringing a new wine fair to the Halifax Convention Centre on Oct. 19.

The iteration of the wine fair is not just another wine event; it’s a curated experience that celebrates the best of local and international wines—with a special focus on Nova Scotian viticulture.

With 4,000 attendees expected across two sessions, the event promises to be a space that brings together wine lovers, industry experts and the Halifax community for a day filled (to the brim?) with tastings, education and unforgettable experiences.

👀 In Case You Missed It

🎻 A classical quartet, dimly lit by hundreds of candles, can convey many emotions—intimacy, romance, relaxation, and in some circumstances, it can even create an eerie atmosphere. For their upcoming performance, Candlelight Concerts and Fever will opt for the latter as they present a memorable night of Halloween-themed tunes played by the Listeso Quartet as they are lit by nothing but candlelight. The Coast’s Brendyn Creamer speaks with Andrew Bryan about the upcoming candlelit concert to ring in the spooky season.

🗳️ HFX Votes 2024: District 11, like its neighbour District 13 and cross-harbour pal District 2, is another one of Halifax’s kind of suburban, pretty rural, coastal communities. For a hot minute there it looked like no one in District 11 was going to answer, but at long last The Coast got a response from one of the candidates so let’s get started.

🗳️ HFX Votes 2024: The new boundaries for this upcoming municipal election will see a changed District 12, one with slightly more people than it should have. If District 12 were to be further divided it would require breaking up some “communities of interest.” And the city has been doing a lot of work in recent years figuring out where exactly the lines are around some of these communities. And in District 12, we’ll start with the incumbent.

🗳️ HFX Votes 2024: Halifax’s District 16 is up for grabs after longtime, twice-acclaimed incumbent Tim Outhit decided not to reoffer. This district, according to the city, is “made up of well-established suburban neighbourhoods lying on the northwestern end of the Bedford Basin.”  The good news for residents of District 16 is that there are some quality candidates running in this district.

☑️ A new poll is finding the race for mayor in Halifax is getting closer—the survey from Narrative Research finds Andy Fillmore remains the preferred candidate for voters with 24% support, but the gap over Waye Mason is closing.

That’s it!
